Docs Setting up screens
Maintenance mode
The on-screen maintenance desktop for troubleshooting a screen in person.
Every screen running Info Display OS has a maintenance desktop for whoever is standing in front of it.
Opening it
- Plug in a keyboard and press Ctrl+Alt+M, or
- send Maintenance to the screen from the editor (see managing screens).
What's in it
A menu with:
- Status and connection test — what the screen is doing and whether it can reach the server.
- Network settings —
nmtuiand the graphical connection editor, for Wi-Fi, static IPs, enterprise Wi-Fi and VPNs. - Server address and pair again.
- Terminal and logs.
- Restart and shut down.
The desktop returns to the player by itself after 2 hours, so a screen is never left stuck in maintenance.
Security
The maintenance desktop runs as the unprivileged infodisplay user. Privileged actions are limited to a short list: reboot, power off, restarting the kiosk or agent, updating packages, setting the server address and starting maintenance. root is locked, and SSH accepts keys only (images ship without any keys).
Physical keyboard access gives the maintenance desktop, including a terminal. Treat a screen's USB ports like any other physical access: mount players out of reach or in a locked enclosure in public spaces.
